Synergistic Activities
Current NSFC (National Nature Science Foundation of China ) and MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) grants that are part of the research program that this proposal seeks to support :
- Ruimin Shen, et al. (2004). Research on Collaborative Learning and Personalized Prediction Model in E-Learning, NSFC Grant No. 60372078.
- Ruimin Shen, et.al.(2004) Realtime Education Resource Recode and Retrieval System, MOST Grant No.2001BA 101A 01.
- Ruimin Shen, et.al.(2004) Development of E-Learning Courseware and Intelligent Answer Machine. MOST Grant No. 2001BA 101A 08-02
Previous projects and program development to build an innovative E-Learning Mode: As the prime investigator, Ruimin Shen undertook the key project from special financial budget of education ministry of 2001 and proposed an innovative E-Learning mode by sharing the real-time class, which was the basic education unit, and transporting it synchronously through both the satellite and IP network. This model has been implemented and applied to near thirty universities all over China and has more than 100 thousand users. He also received various research fundings from National Level (National Natural Science Foundation of China, The High-Tech Research and Development Programme (863) and Key Technology R&D Programme), Shanghai Municipality-level (Shanghai Education Commission and Science and Technology Commission) and International Cooperation (Intel Research Foundation, AT&T Educational Foundation and IBM-SUR Research Foundation). He is devoted to build a novel E-Learning platform that enables teachers to feel that “everything is easy” and make students feeling that “everything is available” and “everyone is different”.
Other leadership activities : Ruimin Shen established “Shanghai E-Learning Lab”, “ Intel-SJTU Distance Learning Center ” and “Shanghai Telecom – S hanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) Cooperation E-Learning Research and Development Center ”. Members of the labs devote their efforts to building up an intelligent E-Learning environment based on Network and Communication Technology, Multimedia Technology, Security Theory, Information Retrieval and Data Mining technologies, which is developed and used at the Network Education College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. As an acknowledgement for his great efforts in E-Learning, he was invited to give a speech, as one of the two foreign invited speakers, in the Technology Assessment of Web-Based Learning (Los Angeles, Feb. 2003), co-organized by USA NSF and USA NRO (Navy Research Office). As a delegate of NSFC, he was invited to attend the E-Learning and E-Science Bio-Conference ( Cambridge , Feb. 2004), co-organized by NSFC and UK NSF. He also made a keynote speech in the MIT and CORE (China Open Resource for Education) OCW (Open Courseware) Conference ( Shanghai , Sept. 2004).
Software development related to this proposal: Ruimin Shen has developed a Multimedia Courseware Authoring System, Two-way Satellite Real-time Teaching System, Synchronous Lecture Content (e-pen, screen, mouse-click, PowerPoint, word, etc.) Sharing and Recording System, Learner Community Self-organization and Personalized Learning Resource Recommendation System and so on. These systems enable the Real-time Classroom Sharing and Delivery, automatic courseware generation, content-based resource retrieval and Personalized Learning Service. These contributions lead to three software copyrights (Copyright No. 2003SR8659, 2003SR8660, 2003SR8247) and six patent applications. ( Patent Application Serial No. 03116769.9, 03116983.X,03128926.6, 03142208.X, 200310107966.7, 200310109063.2 ). These results have been incorporated in the projects mentioned above. They are also part of the collaborative workspace node of this proposal's research program.
Chinese E-Learning Technology Standards Regulation : As a member of Education Ministry Distance Education Committee, Ruimin Shen is in charge of the regulation of several Chinese E-Learning Technology Standards, such as Specification for content packaging: information model (CELTS-9.1/DS1.0), Specification for Simple Sequencing Information Model (CELTS-8.1/WD1.0), Specification for Virtual Experiment Information Model (CELTS-26.1/WD1.0). Especially, the CELTS-9.1/DS1.0 is becoming the Chinese National Standards and CELTS-26.1/WD1.0 has been submitted to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC36.
NSFC proposal reviews (past years): reviewed the proposals of Department of Information Science, NSFC (National Nature Science Foundation of China).
